Crossing time: plan for 5 hours

The crossing is scheduled to last 3 hours 30, but it usually runs longer, so plan around 5 hours.

Passengers report this across all four companies and over several years. The quicker crossings take 4 hours 30, a typical one takes 5 hours, and a late departure takes longer.

Calm crossings run to 5 hours too, so the weather is not the only cause. Loading, turning the boat around and the state of the sea all add time on a route this long.

The arrival time on a ticket assumes the scheduled 3 hours 30. A boat can leave on time and still reach Coron later than the ticket says.

Plan on an hour for check-in, possibly an hour of delay, and about 5 hours at sea. A midday departure reaches Coron in the early evening, not mid-afternoon, so keep that evening free.

The boats have Starlink wifi and a snack bar, but both vary by sailing and neither is worth relying on. Bring food, water and something to do, and treat working wifi as a bonus.

From El Nido: departures

As of 7 October 2026, only Montenegro sails from El Nido, at 12:00 on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays.

Every boat on this route leaves El Nido around midday, between 12:00 and 12:30. The morning times also quoted for this route are departures from Coron.

Jomalia, which covered the other days, is temporarily closed, and so is Atienza. The source is the El Nido Tourism Office’s own advisory, confirmed with each company.

So no boat leaves El Nido on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays or Saturdays as of that date. If your dates are fixed, check them against the 3 sailing days first, or look at flying.

In high season, boats sail more often and cancellations are less common.

Companies add and drop days through the year, so this is the rota as the El Nido Tourism Office published it on 7 October 2026 rather than a fixed timetable. Confirm your own date with the company.

From Coron: return sailings

Boats from Coron sail on the same days, in the morning: as of 7 October 2026, Montenegro leaves at 6:00 on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays.

The same vessel makes both crossings, so a cancellation in one direction usually cancels the other too. Keep that in mind when you watch the weather.

Operators: four sell it, one sails

Four companies sell this crossing: Montenegro Lines, Jomalia Shipping, Atienza Interisland Ferries and Phimal. As of 7 October 2026, only Montenegro is sailing.

Jomalia is temporarily closed, with no return date given. Atienza was out of service for vessel maintenance by 9 August 2026 and is still closed. Phimal is not on the tourism office’s list of operators at all. Call before you count on any of them.

The offices are within a few doors of each other in town, so comparing them in person takes about 20 minutes.

Fares and discounts

As of 7 October 2026, Montenegro is the one company sailing. In August 2026 it posted a regular fare of ₱3,080 leaving El Nido, and Jomalia charged ₱3,100 before it closed.

When Jomalia sails again, the choice between the two depends on the sailing day and departure time rather than the price.

Montenegro's regular fare is lower leaving Coron: ₱2,816 as posted in August 2026. Its discounted fares are the same in both directions.

Student, senior and PWD (person with disability) fares apply only when you show a valid ID.

Budget ₱3,100 and you will have enough for either company. Booking sites often quote lower figures, around ₱1,760, but you pay the counter price.

Check-in: 60 minutes before departure

Be at the terminal 60 minutes before departure: 11:00 for a 12:00 sailing, 11:30 for a 12:30 one. It is a rule, not a suggestion, and it applies whichever company you are on.

Some sailings leave on time and others run an hour or more behind, so plan for the second. The waiting area is small and gets warm when a sailing is full.

There is not usually an announcement explaining a delay, so be ready to wait without much information.

Boarding and disembarking are slow. Queuing is informal, seat numbers are not always followed, and at Coron the luggage leaves through the passengers’ door. Allow more time at both ends than you would expect.

A voucher from a booking platform is not the ticket. Exchange it for the real ticket at the ferry ticket booth on the day of travel. The booth asks for a valid ID.

Bring something warm: the air conditioning is strong in some parts of the cabin and weaker in others. Most people prone to seasickness find the open upper deck easier.

Seasickness is common enough on this crossing that the crew carry sick bags.

Cancellations: June to October

Between June and October, delays and cancellations are frequent. The route crosses open water on the edge of the typhoon season, and the coastguard suspends sailing when conditions require it. No operator can overrule that.

On 7 and 8 August 2026, Jomalia cancelled the crossing in both directions for unfavourable weather, on two consecutive days. By October it had closed temporarily, leaving one company on the route.

If you travel in that window, do not schedule a flight out of Coron for the evening of your crossing. Give yourself a spare day.

When a sailing is cancelled, rebooking usually means taking a later boat. Refunds can take time, particularly on tickets bought through a booking platform, where the operator is not the one holding your money.

Buying at the office in town makes a rebooking or a refund simpler to arrange.

Luggage, pets and documents

The standard limit on this route is 2 pieces of luggage per passenger. Atienza advertises no limit at all.

Atienza is out of service as of 7 October 2026. Once it sails again, remember it if you travel with dive gear or a long trip’s luggage.

Atienza is also the company that carries pets, with paperwork: a vaccination card, a veterinary health certificate and a permit to transport.

Vehicles and motorcycles need 4 copies each of a police permit to transport, the OR/CR and a valid ID.

Infants, unaccompanied children, passengers aged 70 and over and travellers with a medical condition all need documents. These are typically a medical certificate confirming fitness to travel, and proof of age.

If any of that applies to you, ask at the office before the day.

Flying to Busuanga instead

Flying is faster: El Nido to Busuanga, the airport for Coron, takes about 40 minutes, with several departures across the day.

Cebgo operates the route. It was AirSWIFT until July 2026, and many booking sites still list it under the old name.

Busuanga airport is not Coron town, and comparisons usually leave that part out. A van or taxi takes about 45 minutes, at ₱300 to ₱400 as of 9 August 2026. There are enough vans that waiting is rarely the problem.

Counting the transfer at each end and time at the airports, flying takes half a day door to door, not 40 minutes. That is still well short of the ferry, which takes about 7 hours once check-in and a likely delay are counted.

Flights cost more than the ferry, and the fare changes a lot: from roughly the price of a ferry ticket to about double.

Bad weather stops flights too: some on this route were cancelled in early August 2026, when the ferries also stopped. Treat the plane as the faster option, not the more certain one.

Booking and phone numbers

Book ahead rather than buying at the pier on the day: the route is popular, and boats sell out in high season.

The operators sell tickets directly, and so do agencies in town and the usual booking platforms.

The operators’ websites are booking forms, not published timetables. Jomalia’s asks for a date and shows what is available on it, with no fare list to browse.

That is part of why figures online vary so much. The counter or a phone call is the surer way to confirm a time or a price.
